Description
The last of several scraps I'm uploading from an incomplete Adventure Time project I started in December, aborted in January, and will probably never finish.
The project was primarily an experiment in frame-by-frame animation with an emphasis on overlapping action. I chose Adventure Time partly because I like the show but mostly because it has the easiest characters to draw in anything ever.
Mushroom clouds, on the other hand, are not very easy to draw. Drawing individual frames is fine, but animating the rolling billows is hard. And I had a very hard time finding any animation to use as reference. It's not that I couldn't find mushroom clouds in cartoons; they just didn't move like real mushroom clouds. The best I could find was in The Simpsons Movie, but it was drawn in too different a style to work for my purpose. Eventually I gave up trying to find a good animated reference and just did the best I could with live footage of test bombings.
The image seen on the right was the drawing I did to get myself started; the animation on the left was as far as I got. The cloud remains unfinished.
The yellowy pattern seen in the cloud isn't based on anything realistic; I just wanted to evoke -

this is really cool! i haven't seen anyone try to make something like this.
with current knowledge of the "mushroom war" it was over 900 years ago (based from the time line in the episode simon and marcy) and from the theories people have from evidence, (the bombs at the start of the opening scene, and some episodes) the land of ooo was our normal earth. there is a huge crater on the side of the planet (shown in one of the "5 grayble" episodes) and the place where everyone lives is around africa? as i remember. the nukeular stuff made everything weird and made candy monsters which turned into candy people. also, simon used to be a human and was in a world of humans too. (before the war)
