The mouth flap is temporary in both of these since the audio is a temp recording.
The first shot of the Enthalpy pilot I animated back in October of 2010 that I didn't end up discarding was of Charles saying "Thanks to your burger, I'll explode in less than three hours, and I'm here to shut you down before I die!" (You can see the original version from way back in 2005 here.)
Every shot since that first one, though, the characters have thinner outlines because I mismeasured the outline thickness for the next shot I animated. I intended to leave it in just because I didn't want to redo the shot, but eventually decided I probably should due to the shot having several other changes I wanted to make. This is the only completed early shot I'm replacing, though.
I'm uploading this as a measure of my progress between 2010 and 2012 (and 2005). In before "I like the thicker outlines better." Also in before "I like the 2005 version better." I do actually like the hand-on-hip thing from the 2005 version and kinda wish I'd kept it. If I were to reanimate this yet again (won't happen) I'd keep the hand-on-hip and reduce the intensity of the last head bob. And probably reduce the length of the shot's single smear frame. It didn't stand out as much before I colored it in.
The thing I wanted to make sure of in this shot was that each of his actions had a different weight to it. I remember before I did the shot I saw a bit of Codename: Kids Next Door (not a full episode; just came in on a cousin watching it) and was distracted by the way the talking character's movements all had the same speed, intensity and overshoot. I specifically wanted to avoid that. The shot could certainly still stand to have more subtlety, but for conveying the relevant emotion in limited animation this probably works well enough.
It does look in the 2012 version like Charles is pointing and not flipping the bird, right? If it looks too ambiguous I'll probably have to remove his finger.
I definitely see the improvement in Charles' movements, especially in his arms. I do have to admit that the finger is kinda...suggestive, though. I think if he just indicated with a sort of forward movement without the finger there, it would still get the point across.
PS: I legitimately laughed out loud at the preview image for this. PSS: How is "Lunar Luger" coming along?
I kind of wondered about Charles' pointing finger myself, before I read the description. To clarify, I thought it was pretty obvious he was pointing, but it looks rather questionable as well. Might want to have it removed.
